Fidelio (originally titled Leonore, oder Der Triumph der ehelichen Liebe; English: Leonore, or The Triumph of Marital Love), Op. 72, is Ludwig van Beethoven's only opera. The German libretto was originally prepared by Joseph Sonnleithner from the French of Jean-Nicolas Bouilly, with the work premiering at Vienna's Theater an der Wien on 20 November 1805.
He wrote four overtures for the work (the three Leonore overtures as well as the Fidelio overture). Each in its way can be said to represent dramatic themes in the opera, and no one by itself captures the full essence of the work. Interestingly, various conductors - including Gustav Mahler when he had been the music director of the Vienna Court Opera - have utilized all four.

Beethoven composed only one opera, yet he revised it twice and wrote four different overtures for it. The first production of Fidelio, in Vienna on 20 November 1805 ran to only three performances, and the following spring a shortened version renamed Leonore, oder Der Triumph der ehelichen Liebe (Leonora, or The Triumph of Conjugal Love) was performed just twice. It was not until 1814 that it next appeared, this time in the form in which it has become familiar and with Fidelio restored as its title. This all-Beethoven album brings together Bernard Haitink's 2013 recording of the triumphant Piano Concerto No 2 (with Maria João Pires) and a virtuosic performance. Berlioz: Symphonie fantastique.
