On September 2, 1996 the Pet Shop Boys released their new album, Bilingual. Written and recorded over the previous two years, it was initially planned as some kind of Latin record. Although there are many Latin moments on the finished album (rhythmically, linguistically and emotionally), as time passed this idea provided more an attitude and an orientation then a strict musical blueprint. Another reason for doing the album like this, says Neil, was as a reaction against Britpop. On September 2, 1996 the Pet Shop Boys released their new album, Bilingual.

Released in September 1996, ‘Bilingual’ was the sixth studio album to be released by Pet Shop Boys. It was a UK top 5 record upon release and included 5 singles, all of which were UK top 20 singles. As is often the case with PSB records, ‘Bilingual’ comprises many influences, including those of the music of Latin America, due partly to the Spanish and Latin music Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe had been listening to prior to recording the album. The album was recorded by PSB with Danny Tenaglia and Chris Porter, and has since gained platinum certification in Spain, and Gold in the UK.

On November 11, 1996, 'Single-Bilingual' was released as a single. It has a different title to the album version because 'Everything But The Girl' have just released a single called 'Single'). Bet he's not really communicating, and he knows it.

As a title, Bilingual is a double-edged sword. Disregard its sexual connotations and concentrate on its musical implications - Bilingual is a rich, diverse album that delves deeply into Latin rhythms. Instead, Bilingual is an enormously subtle album, with shifting rhythms and graceful, understated melodies.

Bilingual is the tenth album (sixth containing all original material) by the English electronic duo Pet Shop Boys, released in 1996. The album has sold about 1,000,000 copies worldwide.
