Wonderful Town is a musical comedy from 1953 that was written by Leonard Bernstein, Betty Comden and Adolph Green. The score is great, and unlike a lot of musical comedies today actually has numbers that make you laugh (One Hundred Easy Ways, Pass the Football, Conversation Piece) and some beautiful ballads (A Little Bit in Love, A Quiet Girl). The first cast album of WONDERFUL TOWN sounds even better than ever in Decca's latest remastering. The sound is still somewhat flat (as are all Decca albums from the 40s/50s) but the Decca engineers have worked wonders on the 50 year old tapes making them sound as good as possible. Rosalind Russell was a perfect choice to play the acerbic Ruth.
Wonderful Town, the musical with music by Leonard Bernstein and lyrics by Betty Comden and Adolph Green based on the play My Sister Eileen and the stories of Ruth McKenney about two sisters from Ohio who move to New York City in the 1930s, had a healthy run of 559 performances when it opened on Broadway in 1953. Despite that success, it did not generate a major Broadway revival for 50 years. There were four limited-engagement versions over the years, however, one by the New York City Opera and three by the City Center organization.

So, it was appropriate that in 2000 City Center also put Wonderful Town in its Encores! series of concert renditions of vintage shows worthy of a second look.
Date: November 1, 2003. BEN BRENTLEY of the NEW YORK TIMES says Ms. Murphy is giving one of the most dazzlingly accomplished comic performances that you're ever likely to see in a musical. ¿½ CLIVE BARNES of NEW YORK POST says Broadway lives, and once more it's a wonderful town. ¿½ HOWARD KISSEL of NEW YORK DAILY NEWS says. ¿½Kathleen Marshall's inventive choreography and direction perfectly convey the infectious spirits of this eternally fresh show. ¿½ ELYSA GARDNER of USA TODAY says For a brisk little joyride, Wonderful Town can be pretty heavy going
Leonard Bernstein's collaboration with Betty Comden and Adolph Green on Wonderful Town is one of his great Broadway triumphs, filled with memorable music and great lyrics. And the screwball tale of two fish-out-of-water small-town sisters in NYC (based on the play My Sister Eileen by Joseph Fields and Jerome Chodorov) still sounds comical and fresh, despite the fact that it was written in the '50s and set in the '30s.
