The Optimist is the second studio album by English band New Young Pony Club. It was released on 5 March 2010 on the band's label The Numbers, distributed by the PIAS Entertainment Group. The album showcases a darker, more emotive sound for the band. The songs "Oh Cherie" and "Lost a Girl" were used, respectively, in the third and fourth episodes of the fourth season of Gossip Girl. All tracks written by Tahita Bulmer and Andy Spence, except where noted.

And then, we wake up in the morning Now we’ve had our fill and the glass is empty But when, I get down to the bottom My mind has not forgotten I’m an optimist, you’re a clean slate, maybe. It’s pale, the diary of forever And I’ll know full stop from your flawless entry Some fools, want to throw together Like spectators making better With the ground still hot when the shove is friendly. You have said, You have said Your name is not for me I try not to be Disappointed You have said, you have said Your name is not for me I try not to be Disappointed

Up until the release of this album, I had only dabbled in New Young Pony Club. I considered most of their work boring, cheesy, and even unlistenable, with small pockets of fun and creativity. I now find myself eating my words, both surprised and proud to report that I am absolutely infatuated by the seductive sound of NYPC's "The Optimist".

New Young Pony Club may not live in an age where Apollo and his ilk rule the land - no matter how much lead singer Ty Bulmer wishes she did - but there's certainly something of the daring and defiant about their own return. And while they may not be risking quite the same penalties if it doesn't all go to plan, the price of failure could still be calamitous. The Optimist suffers from no such lulls. The superb 'Before The Light', with its glistening guitars and Bulmer's droning, hypnotic vocal, is an undoubted highlight as she implores "Don't look at me now/ Look at my intellect/ These things I leave behind like footsteps".
