In the Aeroplane Over the Sea is the second and final album by the American indie rock band Neutral Milk Hotel. It was released in the United States on February 10, 1998 on Merge Records and in the United Kingdom in May 1998 on Blue Rose Records. Songwriter Jeff Mangum moved from Athens, Georgia to Denver, Colorado to prepare the album's material with producer Robert Schneider at Schneider's new Pet Sounds Studio in the home of musician Jim McIntyre.

The album is largely inspired by Anne Frank’s The Diary of a Young Girl, a diary she kept while hiding during the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands.
