Edwin Starr was at the height of his creative powers in the 1960s and early to mid-1970s, when he did much of his best work for Motown. Released in late 1998, this CD spans 1965-1974 and boasts many of his essential Motown hits. Starr was very much a product of Northern soul, and yet, he sometimes showed an awareness of the sweaty, rough-and-tumble soul that Stax Records was recording down in Memphis. If My Heart Could Tell the Story," "Stop Her On Sight (.

SOUL MASTER was Starr's debut album and was released on Motown's Gordy imprint in 1968. With Soul music in the '60s, and especially with Motown, the emphasis was on singles, so the album did not chart but does boast a number of R&B hit singles. These include 'Agent Double-O-Soul' and Starr's other top ten Ric-Tic release, 1966's 'Stop Her on Sight (. S)' (R&B as well as 'Headline News' (Pop

Edwin Starr (January 21, 1942 – April 2, 2003) was an American soul music singer. Born Charles Edwin Hatcher in Nashville, Tennessee, Starr is most famous for his Norman Whitfield produced Motown singles of the 1970s, most notably the number one hit War. Edwin Starr was born in Nashville, Tennessee in 1942. He and his cousins (soul singers Roger and Willie Hatcher) moved to Cleveland, Ohio where they were raised.

Produced by Norman Whitfield. Album War & Peace. War is a counterculture era soul song written by Norman Whitfield and Barrett Strong for the Motown label in 1969. Whitfield first produced the song – a blatant anti-Vietnam War protest – with The Temptations as the original vocalists. After Motown began receiving repeated requests to release War as a single, Whitfield re-recorded the song with Edwin Starr as the vocalist, with the label deciding to withhold the Temptations' version from single release so as not to alienate their more conservative fans

Edwin Starr, who arrived at Motown with a fine track record but had never quite dined at Tamla’s top table, had the USA’s, hottest single as ‘War’ started its three-week run atop the Billboard Hot 100. The song was written by Barrett Strong and producer Norman Whitfield, who recorded the first version of it with the Temptations. Whitfield recorded a new version with Starr, the soul man born Charles Hatcher in Nashville in 1942 and raised in Cleveland. He’d made his name at Detroit label Ric-Tic in the mid-1960s with such gems as ‘Agent Double-O-Soul’ and ‘Stop Her On Sight (. ’ before transferring to the Gordy label when Motown bought Ric-Tic outright. Then, in 2016, current rock favourites Black Stone Cherry included their version on their fifth studio album, named after their home state, Kentucky. War’ is on The Hits of Edwin Starr, which can be bought here. Follow the Best Motown Songs Ever playlist.
