The practice of reworking Bach's music stretches through the jazz era back to the Baroque itself, and the "recompositions" of Bach's Six Suites for solo cello heard here are not as radical as they may sound from that title. Yes, cellist Peter Gregson uses the basic material of each movement as a stimulus for further creative activity, but the original material is always there and clearly presented, and in several movements he sticks pretty close to Bach's script

Invited by Deutsche Grammophon to reinterpret Bach’s six cello suites for their Recomposed series, cellist/composer Peter Gregson has come up with beautiful tributes to these 18th-century masterpieces. Following each movement’s natural harmonic curve and rhythm, Gregson explores different approaches, using electronic effects that ripple beneath Bach’s lines (the first movement of Suite No. 5) or taking single bars, transforming them into minimalist gems. Elsewhere, he plays alongside a small cello ensemble, creating playful dances and sumptuous textures.

For his record, Gregson has ‘recomposed’ perhaps the best-loved of all works for his instrument, the Bach Cello Suites. His approach was to retain the shape and flow of the suites, whilst still allowing his own aesthetic to come through. The recording was made at the infamous AIR Studios in London with complex and high production values that made use of the physical space.
