Ed Harcourt (born 14 August 1977) is an English singer-songwriter. To date, he has released six studio albums, two EPs, and thirteen singles. His debut album, Here Be Monsters, was nominated for the 2001 Mercury Prize. Since 2007 he has been writing for other artists, including Sophie Ellis-Bextor and Paloma Faith, and has performed with Marianne Faithfull and the Libertines. His music is influenced by Tom Waits, Nick Cave, and Jeff Buckley, among others. Maplewood is an EP by Ed Harcourt. Harcourt recorded the album on a four-track in his grandmas Sussex house, upon signing the artist to a record contract, Heavenly Records decided to make it his first solo release. The Guardian described it as a bedroom-produced gem, some of the songs were re-recorded during the sessions for Here Be Monsters.

When you're feeling tired, emotional and woozy, there are few songwriters that proffer a musical hug like Ed. There's just something about his melodic blend of romance and melodrama that's innately comforting. The album in question that night was his second, From Every Sphere, one of my favourite records of 2003. Since then, he's been frolicking in Swedish snow, touring the US with REM and, most importantly, falling in love. Although the tail end of the album doesn't quite reach the standard set by the bulk of the songs on offer here, Strangers is further proof that Ed Harcourt is one of the UKs finest songwriters.
