Evil Empire is the second studio album by American rock band Rage Against the Machine, released on April 16, 1996 by Epic Records. Its title refers to a term used in the early 1980s by President Ronald Reagan and many American conservatives to describe the former Soviet Union.

Rage Against the Machine’s second LP, Evil Empire, was produced by Brendan O'Brien. I look at that album as our most punk record, Commerford said. A lot of times when I read things about Rage Against the Machine, they’ll say, ‘they’re heavy metal and ra. I used to bum out on that because I don’t hear the heavy metal in us. I don’t see it in that way. I see us as a heavy rap punk band

Probably they're most recognizable album, Evil Empire is filled with hard hitting power. The first three songs (the trilogy of rock - People of the Sun, to Bulls on Parade, to Vietnow) define the pace of the entire album. Down Rodeo has, for me, some of the best lyrics I've ever heard in a song. I still get goosebumps all these years later.

Rage Against the Machine spent four years making their second album, Evil Empire. Their musical approach didn't change, either. Lead vocalist Zack de la Rocha is caught halfway between the militant raps of Chuck D and the fanatical ravings of a street preacher, shouting out his simplistic, libertarian slogans over the sonically dense assault of the band.

Rage Against the Machine hope to change that with their inflammatory blend of roaring guitars, barked raps and political activism. Their lyrics lambaste government corruption, media manipulation, big business, complacency and ambivalence, and the band members practice what they preach. If the band’s first album was a call to arms, Evil Empire is a declaration of war, only this time, many of the group’s diatribes are aimed at foreign soil. Vocalist and lyricist Zack De La Rocha has become involved with the continuing struggle of the Zapatistas, a group of Mexican farmers seeking emancipation from the ruling class, and at least three songs on Evil Empire address the issue.
