Les Noces is a ballet and orchestral concert work composed by Igor Stravinsky for percussion, pianists, chorus, and vocal soloists. The composer gave it the descriptive title "Choreographed Scenes with Music and Voices" and dedicated it to impresario Sergei Diaghilev. Though initially intended to serve as a ballet score, it is often performed without dance.
There is a perfectly fine 1940s recording by Stravinsky of the Firebird Ballet in its 1945 suite (represented here in a 1960s recording), from early 1946, that would be illuminating for contrast; and, even more important, there's Stravinsky's 1940 New York Philharmonic recording of The Rite of Spring - the latter is even mentioned by Craft.

Igor Stravinsky: The HighResAudio remastered Re-Issues brings together for the very first time various of the mono 'Stravinsky conducts Stravinsky' recordings issued in the 1940s and 1950s, alongside the more familiar stereo remakes from the 1960s. It also includes all of the authorized performances that Stravinsky's assistant Robert Craft conducted for the label in the composer's presence, after age and infirmity had restricted his own ability to do so.
Though this piece didn't reach the stage in its final form until 1923, Stravinsky conceived the idea for a "dance cantata" about a 19th-century Russian peasant wedding 11 years earlier, when he was still working on The Rite of Spring. He began the score in earnest in 1914, by which time he was living in Switzerland. Though composition was interrupted by work on the burlesque Renard, he had finished Les Noces (The Wedding) in the short score, with solo voices and four part chorus, by 1917. Then, however, the problems began.
