Chopin composed his best-known Nocturne in E-flat major, Op. 9, No. 2 when he was around twenty years old. This well-known nocturne is in rounded binary form (A, A, B, A, B, A) with coda, C. The A and B sections become increasingly ornamented with each recurrence. The penultimate bar utilizes considerable rhythmic freedom, indicated by the instruction, senza tempo (without tempo). Nocturne in E-flat major opens with a legato melody, mostly played piano, containing graceful upward leaps which becomes increasingly wide as the line unfolds.

As the song progress, the main melody is repeated thrice, and each time includes more and more ornamentation, a classic Chopin technique. The song is generally played with contrast, switching from light and sweet to loud and dramatic. It’s played in a time signature of 12/8 (meaning there are 12 eighth notes per measure) in andante and espress dolce, which means moderately slow (walking pace) and very sweet. One of the most famous recordings of the piece comes from Arthur Rubinstein, a pianist known for his Chopin work
The Nocturne in E-flat major, O. is very possibly the most famous work ever penned by Chopin. In spite of the many tasteless renditions to which it has been subjected over the years (a great many of them on disc, and by performers of some stature), it remains a work of great charm. Of the three pieces in Opus 9, this is the one most heavily indebted to John Field, both in terms of its direct phrase structure and its rather simple atmosphere. Cast in the kind of two-part song formula beloved of nineteenth-century salon musicians, O. is one of the briefest of the Nocturnes.
