The male chorus represents the ancestral voice of the Indian human inhabitants of the forest. The reproduction of bird singing and of other typical noises has not to be conceived as merely descriptive; on the contrary, the idea is to convey the feelings of a person immersed in the forest. Villa-Lobos used the Symphony of the Air, an orchestra created in 1954 by members of the NBC Symphony Orchestra after NBC decided to disband the orchestra and the weekly broadcast concerts. The orchestra was usually led by Leopold Stokowski, who had regularly conducted the NBC Symphony during the 1940s, and it survived until 1963.
