Recording at A&M studios in Hollywood, he worked with Grammy Award Winning Engineer/Producer Tommy Vicari. Singing, writing and playing guitar and bass since childhood, Joel has performed and co-produced numerous recording sessions with world renowned musicians including Ringo Starr, Harry Nilsson, Ric Emmett, Billy Osborne, David Foster and Bob Rock

Switching back to Stallion Thumrock, they carried on their American adventure, playing as far away as Kansas. Upon their return to Vancouver, they added Wade's younger brother Joel on bass, only 16 at the time. This meant Watson could switch back to piano and organ. Released by Haida Records, their eponymous debut album was in the stores later that year. Along with the band's only single "Mayday," tracks like the lead-off "Ocean Stretches," "Going Back To The Mountains," and "Burnin' Dem Pots" were indications of the dozen tracks beaming with a fresh pop rock attitude, with a slight psychadelic funk groove.

By early 1972, Stallion Thumrock was playing concerts and rock festivals, and had done several recording sessions. We finally landed a record deal. Clare Laurence, the keyboard/sax player for both the bands Chilliwack and The Collectors was brought in to produce the album for Heida records and it was to be distributed by A&M Records. We recorded the album at A&M Studios in Hollywood in about a week (we had a low budget). Highlighting the event was the fact that Carol King in studio A, and Joni Mitchell and Steven Stills were recording in studio B next to us. Unfortunately, in the fall.

The Hometown Band was founded by former Collector and Chilliwack sax and keyboard player Claire Lawrence. Since leaving Chilliwack in late 1971 he started his own record label, Haida Records (distributed by A & M) where he signed Stallion Thumrock and folk singer Valdy. While the former bombed, Valdy had hits, and his (Valdy's) songs were included in movie soundtracks. At first Valdy toured as a solo, with just his guitar.
