Sounds of New York is our tribute to a city we love. We spent months capturing the buzz and energy of New York City's neighborhoods and present it to you as ambient noise to help you focus while you work. It’s ambient noise for you to play in the background while you’re working. We just happened to curate these particular background sounds from famous locations throughout NYC neighborhoods. Then, armed with our recording equipment, we went and recorded the daily bustle of the delis, comedy venues, restaurants, parks, concert halls, markets, subway stations, and everything else the city had to offer us.

RL: It was fascinating for me to look at these scores from the standpoint of harmonic and melodic content; how they develop their ideas over the course of a piece; how they introduced and framed the solo improvisations; and what kinds of embellishments and backgrounds they created to compliment the soloist.

Rapper J. Cole (who finds himself on the Ultimate List below) cites consistency as the most important attribute, and says it's important to look both for the big humorous "punch" lines as well as the underlying message of the rapper's songs. Nas (another MC featured on the list) focuses as well on the meaning of the songs, as well as the scale and ambition of the rapper's narratives and storytelling. He has also gone on the record as saying that there is no such thing as the "best rapper" or "Greatest of All Time" (often abbreviated as . Wallace was raised in the Brooklyn borough of New York.
