The Austin High School Gang was the name given to a group of young, white musicians from the West Side of Chicago, who all attended Austin High School during the early 1920s. They rose to prominence as pioneers of the Chicago Style in the 1920s, which was modeled on New Orleans Jazz, but sounded more hurried

Lanigan was a member of the Austin High Gang, and played with Husk O'Hare (1925), the Mound City Blue Blowers, Art Kassel (1926–27), the Chicago Rhythm Kings, the Jungle Kings, and the 1927 McKenzie and Condon's Chicagoans recordings. From 1927 to 1931 he played with Ted Fio Rito and worked in orchestras for radio, including NBC Chicago. He played as a sideman in the 1930s and 1940s with Jimmy McPartland (1939), Bud Jacobson's Jungle Kings (1945), Bud Freeman (1946), and Danny Alvin (1950), but began to concentrate more on music outside of jazz at that time

These recordings are often considered to be definitive expressions of the Chicago jazz style. Upon leaving Pollack, McPartland began leading and recording with his own small groups in New York and Chicago. While in Europe during WWII, McPartland met and married English pianist Marian Turner. After becoming one of the most influential figures in the history of jazz in Chicago, Jimmy McPartland died in 1991. Marian (Turner) McPartland was born in 1918 and was classically trained

Known as the Austin High Gang, this devoted coterie of musicians included banjoist Eddie Condon, saxophonist Bud Freeman, and Dave Tough, the premiere white Chicago drum stylist. Krupa sat through two shows every night and three on Saturday to hear Tough on drums, remembered Condon in his autobiography We Called It Music. Soon afterward Tough, in an effort to introduce his younger prot é g é to authentic jazz, took Krupa to see the great New Orleans drummer Baby Dodds
