Alela Diane Menig (born April 20, 1983), known as Alela Diane, is an American singer-songwriter from Nevada City, California. Diane was born in Nevada City, California on April 20, 1983. She grew up singing with her musician parents and performing in the school choir. Her first recordings were self-released in 2003 as Forest Parade.

With a voice as haunting as Cat Power, and as weightless and airy as Hope Sandoval, Diane’s music can be fragile and bracing at the same time. Pedal steel guitars and mournful hillbilly tones on tracks like Dry Grass & Shadows or Age Old Blue (where Michael Hurley joins Diane on vocals) are as luminous and tranquil as are her softer trills and the sparkling mandolins and 12-strings on tracks like To Be Still and The Ocean. Alela Diane recently became part of the Portland, OR music scene, and in 2009 lent her vocals to the Headless Heroes project, a collection of cover songs by artists as varied as Vashti Bunyan and Spaceman 3. In such context, Alela Diane Menig is anachronistic. To Be Still, her sophomore set of soft-spoken folk might not be unique, but Diane's intention here is not to discover originality. Instead, this set honours the honour roll, crafting a collection of approving nods to a style she obviously idolizes too much to alter. There are no surprises here. To Be Still is, in essence, consistent eddies around a single theme. Diane shows each melody the respect it deserves, as if she is wailing through a tribute album to Laurel Canyon's folk scene. Dry Grass and Shadows' sounds road-tested for a Workingman's Dead b-side, while 'My Brambles', punctured through with cello and tambourine, recalls the darker side of Dory Previn at the height of her sexual conquests. As such, it's the accoutrements that elevate these exercises.

Alela Diane's new record may come as a pleasant surprise to those who haven't checked in on the Portland-based singer-songwriter since 2006's The Pirate's Gospel. On that charming but demo-ish jumble sale of an album Diane sorted through familiar folk forms (sea shanty, blues lament, narrative ballad) with a couple of chords and some sleepy arpeggios  . Still, Diane thus far has played in the shadow of better-known Nevada City, Calif. product (and childhood friend) Joanna Newsom. As inevitable the comparison, it's not a very sensitive tool for evaluating either artists' work.
