Marilyn Horne (born January 16, 1934) is an American mezzo-soprano opera singer. She specialized in roles requiring beauty of tone, excellent breath support, and the ability to execute difficult coloratura passages. She is a recipient of the National Medal of Arts (1992) and the Kennedy Center Honors (1995). She has won four Grammy Awards.

The origins of Bellini’s opera I Capuleti e Montecchi offer insight into challenging constraints faced by composers in Italy during the 19th century. After the poor reception of his last opera, Zaira, by early 1830, the composer needed to win back the public's good graces. The implacable hatred between the Capuleti and the Montecchi relentlessly leads the two lovers to their deaths.
