Give Up is the only studio album by American indie band The Postal Service, released on February 19, 2003 through Sub Pop Records. The band began as a side project between electronic music artist Jimmy Tamborello and Death Cab for Cutie's vocalist Ben Gibbard. The two had previously worked together for a track on Dntel's album Life Is Full of Possibilities.

The Postal Service's lone album has proved surprisingly influential, casting a long shadow over the 2000s. Not only did it show up in films and on television- Garden State, Grey’s Anatomy, . but its songs were covered regularly by a wide range of artists, from Ben Folds to metal act Confide to a ska act called Tip the Van. In commercials for Kaiser Permanente, UPS, and (for legal reasons) the actual United States Postal Service, Jimmy Tamborello’s bloops and beeps conveyed the idea of ideas: synapses firing, synergy synergizing, connectivities connecting. Despite the surprising success and durability of Give Up, Tamborello and Gibbard gave up on the collaboration. Sub Pop released an EP of covers and remixes in 2005, but it seemed more like a gesture of apology than of renewal. As a result, the band’s catalog doesn’t sprawl messily across album after album.

The vocals are compelling but still oddly distanced - there's no outbreak of blue-eyed soul, and everyone pretty much sings as if they're afraid to color outside the lines. My faves are "The District Sleeps Alone Tonight," a hauntingly atmospheric opener; "Sleeping In," which has such thoughtfully wry humor; "We Will Become Silhouettes," a sort of semi-paranoid apocalyptic tale; and the furious closer "Natural Anthem. But there are gems everywhere, and I think it's because The Postal Service brings a strong human touch to their music. You can hear it in the passion lurking behind the staid vocals, and in the thrilling inclusions of instruments (a guitar here, drums there) that pepper the arrangements.

He drums up some of the most chaotic of desperate themes in a lot of his greater songs that I cannot imagine, and even more so, he places himself as a character in a lot of the tales he tells. What makes Give Up give me a 10, is essentially how easy it is for me to get on board with. It’s super chaotic and detailed, each second was crafted with intent,.

Coming off their work on Dntel's beautiful This Is the Dream of Evan and Chan, Jimmy Tamborello and Death Cab for Cutie's Ben Gibbard team up again for their full-length debut as Postal Service, Give Up. Instead of covering that EP's territory again, with this album the duo crafts a poppier, new wave-inflected sound that recalls Tamborello's work with Figurine more than Dntel's lovely subtlety.

Beautiful pressing! A pop and crackle here or there, but all around quiet as can be. Pretty presentation too. Recommended.
