For the most part, ‘Punk Goes Pop: Volume 5’ fails on all of the above, which has sadly been the case for the past few additions into the series. There are a few worthy contenders in the mix however. Memphis May Fire‘s take on ‘Grenade’ by Bruno Mars brings a nice stomp onto the original, along with a far more up-tempo chorus. Glad You Came’ by We Came As Romans is surprisingly addictive too, not sounding too different to The Wanted original, before the gritty vocals of David Stephens and the full band join in for a post-hardcore facade

Like its predecessors, Punk Goes Pop Volume 5 features several hits and a few misses. The album opens with Memphis May Fire’s version of Bruno Mars’ Grenade. The band kick up the tempo and throw in some well-placed guttural screams, giving the soulful ballad a dose of metal. The Maine go the opposite route, slowing things down on their version of Cyndi Lauper’s Girls Just Wanna Have Fun before launching into the chorus with thick guitars and earnest vocals.
