154 is the third album by the English post-punk band Wire, released in 1979 (see 1979 in music) on EMI imprint Harvest Records in the UK and Europe and Warner Bros.

It's difficult to remove the discs without leaving marks. Especially disc 3 of the "Chairs Missing" and "154" sets which is packed very tightly to the back cover of the book. I removed them VERY carefully and still managed to get a couple small marks on disc 3 of both sets. Plan on storing the discs outside the books.

The album as a whole is less purposefully fragmented than its predecessor, the songs more conventionally structured even as they veer in unexpected directions. The stunning centerpiece is "Mercy", which provides the basic blueprint for an absolute ton of tension/release post-rock. As it stands, they didn't, and Wire famously quit a year after 154, claiming to have run out of ideas. Their subsequent reunions have put the lie to that notion, but you have to admire Wire's insistence on laying off when the inspiration doesn't feel right, even as the band's initial run remains an unassailable testament to its unquenchable creativity.

What’s most commendable about 154 is how it sits in context with Wire’s 1970s output; the transition the band made over a two-year period from a balls-out, boisterous act to an occasionally minimal, oft decelerated outfit.

Their third album, 154 manages to go even further out on a limb. For what it lacks in Pink Flag’s frenetic energy, it makes up for in flashes potent electricity. On the catchy, ‘The 15th ‘ front man Colin Newman uneasily grows accustomed to the notion of being a vocalist. Giving credence to 154 being the most difficult of Wire’s early albums. But the doomy, ‘Single . shows just how far Wire had come since their debut. Where much of Pink Flag felt like it was cut live, here the band isn’t shy about embracing all the wizardry the recording studio has to offer. Layered synths and backing vocals take front stage to any gritty guitars.
