The Royal Ballet Gala is one of the finest RCAs recorded in London's Kingsway Hall. The chunks of great ballet music are well served by orchestra, conductor and engineer. Each ballet is given full attention by the players, something not always attained at Covent Garden during long ballet nights! The threat of eternity does have it's merits. This was one hell of an analogue album set of two LPs in the prestigious Darius-Soria-Series, recorded by UK Decca for release in the US on RCA Living-Stereo at the time when both labels worked closely together in Europe (end fifties - to middle the sixties). By the time this was recorded (1959) Decca has already anchored-pined-down their "tree" microphone technique and dispensed with the tube-cylinders around the microphones which (previously) prohibited the microphones from capturing a wide sound-field with a secure depth of sound.
Peter Wright's interpretation of The Nutcracker has been enchanting children and adults alike since its first performance by The Royal Ballet in 1984. Lev Ivanov's 1892 ballet combined with Tchaikovsky's sumptuous, iconic score are presented in a festive period setting with vivid designs to make this a charming and magical production.
