In kleinerer Besetzung arbeitet er zusammen mit dem Kölner Saxophonisten Wollie Kaiser, ist Kopf der Formation Georg Ruby Village Zone, zu Beginn mit Dieter Manderscheid und Christian Thomé, aktuell mit Ulla Oster und Nils Tegen. Er ist Mitglied des Trios mit Claas Willeke und Oliver Strauch. 1996 war er Preisträger des in Gera ausgetragenen Deutschen in der Sparte Jazz. Neben seinen Solo-Auftritten als Pianist war er auch im Duo mit Wollie Kaiser sehr erfolgreich: Die gemeinsame Aufnahme Ruby Domesticus Vulgaris erhielt 1987 im Cadence-Poll New York die Auszeichnung als „beste ausländische Produktion des Jahres.
