Diana Krall, who comes from British Columbia, established herself as a fine jazz singer and pianist in the 1990s when she transferred from the small Canadian label Justin Time to a major. This is the business model since followed by Jamie Cullum, Clare Teal and many others supplying the seemingly endless demand for easy-on-the-ear jazz singers with a firm grasp on the great American songbook. In an interview with Keith Shadwick in the current Jazzwise magazine, Krall explains the way that Elvis Costello, her new husband, co-wrote the words (to her music) by turning a "laundry list" of her memories and thoughts into coherent lyrics. I'm Coming Through and Departure Bay are striking for their emotional and musical honesty.

However, with her latest album, The Girl In The Other Room, Krall not only illustrates her understanding of the breadth of possibilities in the jazz idiom but also reveals her talent as a songwriter. Indeed, the title song of the record is a Krall original. The depth of feeling which lies behind the beautiful façade of Diana Krall's highly successful Verve releases has always been known to her most appreciative listeners. However, with her latest album, The Girl In The Other Room, Krall not only illustrates her understanding of the breadth of possibilities in the jazz idiom but also reveals her talent as a songwriter.

Diana Krall is great at everything she plays and sings, but this album was just a little boring to me compared with some of her others. One person found this helpful. But that's not what "The Girl in the Other Room" is all about. This album is meticulously crafted, smothly produced, with first class musicianship from both Diana and her sidemen. The licks are classic, the vocal stylings are laid back, and her intonation is right on the money. She starts the album with a Mose Alison tune. That takes confidence, and guts.
