Her first album, Frida, produced by her then-fiancé Benny Andersson, was released in 1971 by EMI Columbia. The album received unanimously generous praise from critics and the press, who especially noted the precision and versatility of Lyngstad's voice. For example,Swedish newspaper Dagens Nyheter wrote: "Professional, sure and certain LP-debut. low-key but self-assured personality with sprinkles of temperament, humor and tenderness. The entire album is now included in the EMI compilation Frida 1967-1972. The album was recorded between sessions of the ABBA albums "Waterloo" and "ABBA". Due to the rising popularity of the group, the album took 18 months to record.

Waterloo" is the second studio album by the Swedish pop group ABBA, and the first released internationally. It was originally released in Sweden on 4 March 1974 through Polar Music. The album's title track won ABBA the 1974 Eurovision Song Contest and became a global hit, launching the group's career. ABBA's second (and . debut) album contains the American Top Ten title track, as well as "Honey, Honey," a minor . hit that deserved better. This album is rather unusual in the group's output, however, for the fact that the guys are still featured fairly prominently in some of the vocals, and for the variety of sounds including reggae, folk-rock, and hard rock embraced by its songs. The reggae number "Sitting in the Palmtree" is quite remarkable to hear, with its perfect Caribbean beat and those radiant female voices carrying the chorus behind the beat.

Benny and Anni-Frid were married between 1978 and 1980, as were Bjorn and Agnetha married in 1971 but divorced in 1979; they had a son and a daughter together. The band became well known for their 70s style outrageous costumes throughout their career. Frida, as she is known, had great international success post-ABBA with her first album selling more than . million copies. She married Prince Heinrich Ruzzo Reuss von Plauen in 1992, but he died of lymphoma in 1999 aged just 49 – a year after she tragically lost her daughter Lise-Lotte in a car crash. Anni-Frid reportedly inherited von Plauen's fortune and is thought to have £75 million. She currently lives in Switzerland with her British partner, Henry Smith, 5th Viscount Hambleden.
