Janácek s choral works draw on an extremely rich repertory of folksongs and folk tales. The composer employed idioms from Bohemian and Moravian traditions, with their characteristic folk dances and rustic nursery rhymes, and on the recently published Moravian Duets of his compatriot Antonín Dvorák, to convey a mixture of emotions, forever shifting between cheerfulness and melancholy. Daniel Reuss and Cappella Amsterdam are joined by tenor Thomas Walker and pianist Philip Mayers in this recording of rarely heard vocal music. Exclusively for Prime members. Choral music: Choral music, music sung by a choir with two or more voices assigned to each part. Choral music is necessarily polyphonal-i. consisting of two or more autonomous vocal lines. It has a long history in European church music. The cantata, as developed in northern Germany in the 17th century, often relied only upon soloists and a small group of instruments, although the role of the chorus gradually became more important. In more than 200 church cantatas written by . Bach, the chorus often occupies a prominent place and is given music of challenging y on a par with the music of the accompanying instrumental forces. The cantatas use the chorus again in the closing chorale, which is usually a special setting of a hymn tune with orchestral doubling or accompaniment.

Leoš Janáček: Choral Works celebrates the synthesis of Eastern and Central European themes, texts of the distant past, and contemporary composition. Czech composer Leoš Janáček, like many of his contemporaries, was a preservationist. He worked to document the folk songs of Bohemian and Moravian culture, sometimes tabling more serious works in favor of posterity.
