It was primarily driven by three successive music recording formats, the 33 1⁄3 rpm LP record, the audiocassette and the music Compact disc. Rock musicians were often at the forefront of the era.

1962–1966 (also known as "The Red Album") is a compilation album by the English rock band the Beatles, spanning the years indicated in the title. Released with its counterpart 1967–1970 ("The Blue Album") in 1973, it reached No. 3 in the United Kingdom and No. 1 in the United States Cash Box album chart. However, in Billboard, 1962–1966 peaked at No. 3, while 1967–1970 reached the top spot. The album was re-released in September 1993 on compact disc, charting at No. 3 in the UK.

Time Life music collections are always solid, well-done affairs, and this one, which features classic early era rock & roll hits from 1962, is no exception. Every track is a hands down winner, and it's always wonderful to hear such timeless gems as Little Eva's "The Loco-Motion," the Drifters' elegant "Up on the Roof," Del Shannon's "Little Town Flirt," and Booker T. & the MG's sturdy and infectious "Green Onions. 1962 was also the year of the twist dance craze, and two immortal selections here, the Isley Brothers'.

A special double album released to commemorate the tenth anniversary of instrumental rock kingpins the Ventures, this set includes over 20 hits that signify the year 1970 like few other albums could. Late-'60s nuggets like "Everybody's Talkin," "Bridge Over Troubled Water," "MacArthur Park," "Hey Jude," "Spinning Wheely," and "By the Time I Get to Phoenix" provoke a few interesting covers from the band, though anyone the least bit familiar with the Ventures will be unsurprised at any of the songs here. In the '70s, the band moved on to funk, disco, reggae, soft rock and Latin music. The Ventures' lineup changed slightly during 1962. Howie Johnson left the band, to be replaced by session man Mel Taylor; also, Nokie Edwards took over lead guitar with Bob Bogle switching to bass.

1970 may have marked a new decade, at least on the calendar, but as you'll see in the below list of 1970's Best Rock Albums, it was still pretty much the '60s musically. A few new names surface here and there, but for the most part, the year was dominated by many of the previous decade's biggest artists, including the Doors, Bob Dylan and Jimi Hendrix. Even the Beatles had one more thing to say before calling it quits. It's both growth and transition, but more so than that, it was an extension of an era that helped shape rock music forever. If the LPs on our list of 1970's Best Rock Albums seem like an end, rather than a beginning, that's because it was. The '70s would need another few years to kick into gear.
