Children's opera in one act by Malcolm Williamson, libretto by Malcolm Williamson after the story by Oscar Wilde. The poverty and misery of the city compare sadly with the golden statue of the Happy Prince. A swallow, the Prince's messenger, distributes the Prince's gold and jewels to the poor and needy, but the swallow dies of the winder cold and is thrown into the furnace along with the stripped statue.
The Happy Prince and Other Tales (sometimes called The Happy Prince and Other Stories) is a collection of stories for children by Oscar Wilde first published in May 1888. It contains five stories: "The Happy Prince", "The Nightingale and the Rose", "The Selfish Giant", "The Devoted Friend", and "The Remarkable Rocket".
The Happy Prince never dreams of crying for anything. I am glad there is some one in the world who is quite happy, muttered a disappointed man as he gazed at the wonderful statue. He looks just like an angel, said the Charity Children as they came out of the cathedral in their bright scarlet cloaks and their clean white pinafores. How do you know? said the Mathematical Master, you have never seen one. Ah! but we have, in our dreams, answered the children; and the Mathematical Master frowned and looked very severe, for he did not approve of children dreaming

Williamson, Malcolm Composer, pianist, organist Malcolm Benjamin Williamson died in March of 2003, after nearly three decades spent as Master of the Queen's Music, the title bestowed on him by Queen Elizabeth II in 1975. Critics questioned the direction of his career, however, when he began writing operas for children, such as The Happy Prince, a 1965 work based on an Oscar Wilde story. It attracted international publicity," a Times of London contributor wrote of its Farnham Parish Church premier, "and was melodious, with generally conventional harmonies and some mildly contemporary idioms that were especially singable by children.
In a few days Opera Siam will be mounting the Thai, perhaps Asian, premiere, of an opera by the Australian composer Malcolm Williamson. The libretto is, pretty much verbatim, the well known fairy tale by Oscar Wilde. Although the story was ostensibly written for children, and Williamson’s opera was originally composed to be performed by children, the lessons of this story are subtle and apply to adults as well - or even more so. Plus, I think there is a Buddhist lesson to be learned as well. The mythos surrounding the life of Siddhartha Gautama is in fact remarkably similar to the story of The.
Malcolm Williamson – The Happy Prince. Queens Park Junior Singers, Queens Park Community School, 22nd Nov 2014-11-24. The work is modelled on Britten's children's opera 'Noyes Fludde' which the QPJS performed last year, so following that production with Williamson's piece is a logical step. The format is similar, an operatic formula with arias, ensembles and choruses. The orchestration is also modelled on Britten, with two keyboard parts and percussion.
British Youth Opera’s production of Malcolm Williamson’s skittish and farcical piece is first rate, with some standout performances. English Eccentrics was Williamson’s second opera, following smartly on the heels of his version of Graham Greene’s Our Man in Havana, which had been successfully staged at Sadler’s Wells in London the previous year. The opera has no narrative thread; its two acts consist of seven more or less independent scenes, each based on one or more of the vignettes from Sitwell’s book. It’s a strange mixture of the farcical and the vaguely pathetic.
