Chubby Checker (born Ernest Evans, October 3, 1941) is an American singer-songwriter. He is widely known for popularizing the twist dance style, with his 1960 hit cover of Hank Ballard's R&B hit "The Twist". In September 2008 "The Twist" topped Billboard's list of the most popular singles to have appeared in the Hot 100 since its debut in 1958, an honor it maintained for an August 2013 update of the list. VARIETY, on the Twist. Four songs on the PARKWAY LP entitled YOUR TWIST PARTY (P7007) were Billboard charters. The Twist" was in Sept. 60 and again in Ja. 62. This LP was on Billboard's 200 Album chart in De. 61. Vocalist Chubby Checker had PARKWAY's first four LP releases and four of that label's next seven. Even the Beatles on their first American visit (Fe. 62) got caught up in the Twist, shaking it with great enthusiam at NYC's Peppermint Lounge, but by then this phenomenon had about run its course. The original "Twist" was a 1959 Hank Ballard side that went nowhere. When Chubby covered it soon after, the dance became an international craze.
