Coney Island Baby was, in my opinion, Reed's first mature album and a masterpiece of the rock era. He was young, he was funny, almost romantic but no sentimental slob. He knew too much of the streets of NYC to fall for that. So here we have "Coney Island Baby," a gorgeous record from 1976 brimming with artful hooks and catchy melodies. It's tuneful, at times even ghoulishly cheerful, and favors harmonies over feedback and distortion. Of course, the pretty surface is deceptive.
