Show of Hands are an English acoustic roots/folk duo formed in 1986 by singer-songwriter Steve Knightley (guitars, mandolin, mandocello, cuatro) and composer and t Phil Beer (vocals, guitars, violin, viola, mandolin, mandocello). Joined by singer and double-bassist Miranda Sykes for a tour in 2004, Show of Hands continue to regularly perform as a trio with Sykes, as well as in their original format.

Show Of Hands Anglicana. Published Nov 01, 2000. Driving upbeat tunes like "Longdog," "Broomfield Hill" and "The Blind Fiddler" show an ease with the dynamics of rock culture that connect folk traditions with contemporary life. If this pisses off purists, it enables the rest of us to enjoy a rich and enduring tradition

Fair Ellen Of Ratcliffe. They began playing together in 1999 and their first album as a duo was Through and Through (2001). In 2002 they were both session musicians on Eliza Carthy's album Anglicana, and toured with her as part of her band The Ratcatchers. However it was their second album, Bellow, in 2003 that drew attention. The tunes and songs were mostly traditional, grounded in the Morris tradition. Spiers and Boden are an English folk duo. John Spiers plays melodeon, concertina and other squeezeboxes, while Boden plays fiddle, sings, and stamps out the rhythm on a piece of board

Guitar wizard Robert Fripp joins forces with some of the finest six-string pickers around, offering up a truly intricate variety of music on Show of Hands. Anyone who is a guitar enthusiast will be astonished at how tight Fripp comes across with his unique style

Like Textura, Anglicana also developed different varieties. Anglicana Formata' is the most formal of these. It was used for copying books and shows letter forms which are uniform and separate. Cursive forms are kept to a minimum. In particular, ascenders and descenders are shorter and less exaggerated and the script looks solid and square. Here are two examples from fifteenth-century manuscripts in the Wollaton Library Collection. Overall they are called 'court hands', but certain government departments developed their own particular styles of handwriting, such as 'Exchequer hand' and 'Chancery hand', which get harder to read as they fossilize into very stylized forms after the fifteenth century. The example below is a typically spiky, precise hand used for writing charters in the twelfth century. Detail from Me 3 D 2, . 175. In the thirteenth century scribes began to use a form of Cursiva Anglicana.

Most of the material on A Show of Hands is from Power Windows (1985) and Hold Your Fire (1987). Many of the performances stick closely to the studio versions, even down to having ’til Tuesday’s Aimee Mann repeat her backing-vocal stint for Time Stand Still. The sensation of a studio recording is heightened by the remarkable sound quality of the recording (even the crowd recorded well). Rush’s prodigious chops are proven crowd pleasers, but this collection is a morass of muscle-bound technique, quasi-profound lyrics and Geddy Lee’s shrill screech. The last four numbers begin to redeem the album, but it’s too little too late for this seventy-five minute, double-LP endurance test. In This Article: Rush. Want more Rolling Stone?
