Lou Rhodes reteams with former Lamb partner Andy Barlow for an elegant trawl through her recent personal history, writes Maddy Costa. Lou Rhodes's third solo album is also her first collaboration with Andy Barlow, her former partner in electronica duo Lamb, since they drifted apart in 2004. But anyone expecting a deviation from Rhodes's Nick Drake-influenced singer-songwriter path should forget it. As co-producer, Barlow's touch is felt not in electronic trickery but acoustic effects: the resonantly clanging guitar chords in It All; the shattering climax to Circles

One Good Thing’ disarmingly documents the last two years of Lou’s life. Manchester’s most cherished and acclaimed female soul returns with her most brutally raw record to date. One Good Thing’ disarmingly documents the last two years of Lou’s life

As the vocalist in Nineties trip-hop duo Lamb, Rhodes proved herself a grand mistress of melancholia, and though she's since headed folk-wards in her solo guise, her mood remains unlifted. Sombre, spectral and decidedly Nick Drake-ish, her third employs spare interplay between finger-picked guitar and strings as a backdrop to hard-won reflections on life, love and loss. Her tremulous burr is predictably affecting, but you only wish her melodies resonated quite as strongly as her emotions.

Lamb are an English electronic music duo from Manchester, whose music is influenced by trip hop, drum and bass and jazz. The duo consist of producer Andy Barlow and singer-songwriter Lou Rhodes. They achieved commercial success with the hit singles "Górecki" and "Gabriel". On the basis of three songs, Barlow and Rhodes signed a six-album deal with Mercury Records in 1995.

The album is also the first release on Motion Audio, a new label operated by The Cinematic Orchestra. Rhodes has distilled the singer-songwriter method down to its absolute essence, except that crucially the tunes herein aren't particularly distinctive. In a form where the song should be all, these songs are lacking. The lyrics mingle optimism and deliberate naivety, with even the downer moments coming across as exultantly miserable rather than genuinely forlorn. Rhodes is undoubtedly sincere, but maybe at the expense of potential humour and irony  . Find out more about our use of this data, and also our policy on profanity.
