The Seeds second album "A Web of Sound" is a MAJOR step forward in every area from their crude-to-the-bone debut. Sure more than a couple of the songs here are still based on the primordial two-chord riff from their one big hit "Pushin' Too Hard", but at least this time they actually kinda sound like different songs because they have now learned to play choruses that have different chords than the verses! First track "Mr. Farmer" was released as a single and just missed the top 40, and is certainly a lost classic from the summer of love

The basic sound of the group is unchanged - there’s heavy emphasis on the vocals of Sky Saxon, and the main instrumental load is carried by the piano player. The material is more subtle this time, especially lyrically, but the powerful, driving sound which all the things on the first LP had is also present here.

While their singles were Garage-Punk, The Seeds attempted to branch out into improvisational Blues-Rock and psychedelia on their first two albums, "The Seeds" and "Web of Sound", both in 1966. With their third album, 1967's "Future", the band attempted a psychedelic concept album in the vein of The Beatles' "Sgt. Unfortunately the LP only managed to get to for one week

Talk about The Seeds - A Web Of Sound

Sky Saxon's voice, which was a big part of the charm of the group's sole hit 'Pushin' Too Hard', is revealed to be fairly weak and limited on these numbers. He's almost the male equivalent of Iris De Ment, a singer who scored a success with 'Our Town'. Try to listen to a whole album of that voice! I can't do it, and I find Saxon's warbling just as irritating. The music is not compelling to my ear. It's kind of psychedelic, it's almost rock. I didn't really understand the mentality of any of the songs. 'Rollin' Machine' is just plain goofy. Buy a 45 of 'Pushin' Too Hard' by the Seeds and you've got the Best of the Seeds.
