The group's second album The New Christy Minstrels in Person was released in February 1963 (recorded back in September 1962 while Connelly was still in the line-up. In January 1963, the group recorded The New Christy Minstrels Tell Tall Tales! (Legends and Nonsense), which was released in May shortly after the Andy Williams Show had wrapped for the season. Reflecting this shift, they had a Billboard Top 100 hit in the spring of 1965 with a cover of "Chim Chim Cher-ee" from the Disney film Mary Poppins. They also performed the song "live" on the Academy Award telecast the night it won "Best Song. Turnover in the group's roster started to accelerate through 1965, and at an even faster rate in the years that followed.

'Chim chimmeny" is a song from Mary Poppins, the 1964 musical motion picture. It was originally sung by Dick Van Dyke and Julie Andrews, and also is featured in the Cameron Mackintosh/Disney Mary Poppins musical. The song won the 1964 Academy Award for Best Original Song.

The New Christy Minstrels. By the spring of 1965, the New Christy Minstrels were into their eighth lineup during their three-year existence with only Nick Woods and Art Podell remaining from the first incarnation. As if that weren't enough, the band's primary force, Randy Sparks, had split the previous fall as a series of ongoing internal battles pushed him farther away from the direction that the Christys were headed. After the album Cowboys and Indians (1964), the Christys were dealt a further blow when lead vocalist Barry McGuire and recent recruit Peter Potash jumped ship after the combo's successful.
