On the verses Prass sings solo, her voice floats and rustles the way it did on her self-titled 2015 debut. At first listen, that album, with its delicate but ornate orchestration, offers an aesthetic more suited to her modest vocal style. But on Sisters -and throughout The Future-the grooves cut deeper, threatening to overpower her melodies. That contrast has political implications of its own: The tenderness of Prass’ voice poses a challenge to the notion that brute force and bluster are the most effective ways to relay a message. Listening as Prass struggles through the muck, what’s clear is that The Future and the Past is really about the present-about finding ways to push through each day without giving over to despondency. This ship may be going down, but these songs are another set of buoys fighting to keep it afloat.

But her Nashville apprenticeship had also left Prass extremely prolific.

Complete your Natalie Prass collection. Great album, but sadly a pretty noisy pressing. I don't know if the colored vinyl has anything to do with that. Reply See 2 replies Notify me Helpful.

In an interview with Exclaim!, Natalie Prass explained how this second full-length album was finished and ready to be released, but then she heard the news of Donald Trump winning the US election. Originally, The Future and the Past was about the end of a toxic relationship, but Prass pushed the album’s release to scrap half the songs and replace them with songs that tackle culture divides and gender and income inequality, all of which have been exacerbated during Trump’s presidency. I would have been devastated if I released a neutral record, one that didn’t talk about any of the things that.

Natalie Prass' new release The Future and the Past is well titled. The songs' lyrics concern impending events of a personal and political nature (depending on the song). The music's rhythms recall the dance-pop the late '80s and '90s. Janet Jackson reportedly was a major influence. And while Prass found it unnecessary to say, the record is firmly in the present moment. From the very beginning of the album, Prass gets her groove on. The opening track "Oh My" begins with drums and synth, before a scratchy guitar riff and an ooo-ooo chorus joins in-and then the vocals come. The song is a diatribe about the current state of the world from both an ecological and political perspective. Seems like every day we're losing, When we chose to read the news," she sings with a heartbreaking ache. The death of the bee population, global warming, fake news, etc. are the new normal.

Call this Prass looking into the future as much as the past, a move she telegraphs in the very title of this exceptional second album. Savvy and stylish, the album updates a number of classic sounds - songs deliberately styled in a '60s tradition are draped in '80s fashion and vice versa - which creates an appealing bit of cognitive dissonance: certain sounds and arrangements seem naggingly familiar, but Prass and co-producer Matthew E. White piece them together in a fashion that seems. simultaneously fresh and familiar.

Natalie Prass’ second album pairs the sharp and the smooth, its keenly observed lyrics about love and politics grounded in arrangements that recall soft-pop highlights from the past four decades
