Moondance is the third studio album by Northern Irish singer-songwriter Van Morrison. It was released on 27 February 1970 by Warner Bros. After the commercial failure of his first Warner Bros. album Astral Weeks (1968), Morrison moved to upstate New York with his wife and began writing songs for Moondance. There, he met the musicians that would record the album with him at New York City's A & R Studios in August and September 1969.

Moondance (Van Morrison song). Moondance" is a song recorded by Northern Irish singer and songwriter Van Morrison and is the title song on his third studio album Moondance (1970). It was written by Morrison, and produced by Morrison and Lewis Merenstein. Morrison did not release the song as a single until November 1977, seven and a half years after the album was released.

Van Morrison brilliant 1970 classic from the album with the same name. Not released as single till 1977. This is the most popular song playing wise – it had been performed in over 1000 concerts. From the acclaimed album Moondance, Van Morrison’s third solo album, routinely included in top rock album lists.

The album would solidify Van Morrison as an FM radio mainstay, act as a midwife for the burgeoning genre of soft rock, and help usher in the ’70s in America, where the beautiful hippie couples of the late ’60s would soundtrack their developing newfound domestic comfort with the sweet sounds of Morrison’s mystical love-anthems. But before any of that could happen, Morrison would need to fire everyone who had helped him create his 1968 masterpiece, Astral Weeks. Van the Man was tired of floating in space; it was time to dance. Morrison’s lyrical interests on Moondance turn towards the preoccupations of gypsies and sailors. Moondance" is a popular song written by Northern Irish singer-songwriter Van Morrison and is the title song on his 1970 album Moondance. It reached the Billboard Hot 100, charting at The single's B-side, "Cold Wind in August", had been released in the same year, on his latest album at the time, A Period of Transition

The yang to Astral Weeks' yin, the brilliant Moondance is every bit as much a classic as its predecessor; Van Morrison's first commercially successful solo effort, it retains the previous album's deeply spiritual thrust but transcends its bleak, cathartic intensity to instead explore themes of renewal and redemption

Van Morrison comes up with songs many different ways, sometimes a lyric or title idea sparks a song, and other times it's a melody. Moondance" started as a Jazz saxophone instrumental, and Van played that original sax solo he wrote for the song. He told Rolling Stone magazine: "I used to play this sax number over and over, anytime I picked up my horn. That Rolling Stone quote is about all you're going to get from Van regarding the song. The liner notes to the Moondance album were written by his girlfriend Janet Planet, and instead of a traditional explanation of the recording process or a list of thank-you's these notes are a fable, telling the story of an artist in ancient times who has a great gift but keeps it to himself. When his wife gets sick, he cures her using his gift of song. She then asks, "But who will ease your pain, who will save you?" The flute is a big part of this song.
