Return to Ommadawn is the twenty-sixth studio album by Mike Oldfield. It is a sequel to his third album, Ommadawn (1975). The album was released on 20 January 2017 on CD, CD/DVD, LP and as a digital download by Virgin EMI Records. The CD/DVD-Audio set contains a . surround sound mix of the album. Oldfield has played with the idea of creating a sequel to Ommadawn in the past; "Amarok was originally going to be Ommadawn II, but it went off a little in its own direction.

Return To Ommadawn is a music studio album recording by MIKE OLDFIELD (Crossover Prog/Progressive Rock) released in 2017 on cd, lp, vinyl and/or cassette. I have been waiting for this album for so long, only two listens in but its a real return to form for Mike Oldfield. Two long pieces wholly played by Mike and a return to primarily acoustic instruments. Lots of pastoral and Celtic feel. There are occasional references back to the previous masterpiece, Ommadawn, but this is essentially a completely new work in the style on the classic Hergest Ridge to Incantations period.

A true solo effort, Oldfield plays every instrument on the record, which is divided into "Part I" and "Part II," each lasting about 20 minutes in a nod to the original's vinyl format.

I have to admit that I have not ever been a big Mike Oldfield fan. I heard the shorter songs such as indulci jubilo, To France, Moonlight Shadow and liked them. My dearly departed brother was a massive fan, but I could never figure out how he could get excited about a track that lasts for 20 minutes.

Mike Oldfield’s third album, 1975’s Ommadawn, was recorded in the wake of his mother’s death. He was, in his own words, barely communicating with my father, and was struggling with. the stresses – manifesting as panic attacks – induced by the colossal success of his 1973 debut album Tubular Bells. Forty years on, and latest work Return To Ommadawn was made in similarly turbulent circumstances. He had barely recovered from the all-time career high that was performing at the 2012 Olympics opening ceremony in London when his father passed away.
