The Confederates of Schwyz - supported by the Confederates of Uri, who feared for their autonomy, but not supported by the Confederates of Unterwalden - expected the army in the west near the village of Arth, where they had erected fortifications. Even if the Confederate army outnumbered the Habsburgs, they were an untrained militia against a force of well-equipped and trained knights. Landsgemeinde in Glarus in 2006, similar assemblies took place in Ibach until 1848. In 1655 the canton of Schwyz began prosecuting those Protestant families who had remained in Schwyz. Some were turned in to the inquisition in Milan, some were beheaded, and the property of those who fled to Protestant Zürich was confiscated.

cantons of Uri, Schwyz and Unterwalden. The abstract noun Eidgenossenschaft (mostly contracted to eidgnoszschaft or eidgnoschaft) is attested in the 15th century. In modern usage, Eidgenosse is sometimes used (in archaic or ironic usage) for "Swiss citizen". In a historical context, Eidgenossenschaft refers to the medieval Swiss Confederacy, which grew from the 13th to the 16th century in central Europe, persisted until 1798 and then evolved into a federal state in the 19th century. When used in this sense, the eternal nature of the pact is necessary-the members of the Dreizehn Orte.
forest" or "rural" cantons in 1291. Schwyz, Unterwalden, and Uri. Ten further cantons entered the Confederation as follows: Lucerne (another "forest" canton) in 1332; Glarus and Zurich in 1351; Zug (also a "forest" canton) in 1352; Bern in 1353; Fribourg and Solothurn in 1481; Base1 and Schaffhausen in 1501; and Appenzell in 1513. In addition to the thirteen cantons, there were in "Switzerland" various "allied districts," such as the Grisons ("Graubiinden"), St. Gall, Neuchiitel, and Valais. There were also "subject territories" or "com-mon bailiwicks," such as the Aargau, Thurgau, and Vaud. Period of Service as Parish Priest in Glarus. Unterwalden, a free village that allied itself with Schwyz and Uri in 1315, is surrounded by the high Alps as if by a wall and possesses fertile grazing pastures for cattle, which bring the people of Unterwalden great wealth. Unterwalden is a mountain canton comprising Obwalden and Niderwalden, independent half cantons with full rights. In 1291 Niderwalden formed the pact with Uri and Schwyz on the Rütli meadow, followed soon afterwards by Obwalden.
