Britain's Swim Deep amp up their catchy pop hooks and dance beats without shying away from their trademark neo-shoegaze guitar guns on their inspired sophomore album, 2015's Mothers. If the group's debut, 2013's Where the Heaven Are We, found the Birmingham outfit repurposing a catchall brand of late-'80s and early-'90s rock from Ride to the Stone Roses, then Mothers takes the influences even further, mixing in propulsive electronics, synth-heavy new wave lyricism, and exotic Day-Glo trip-hop beats that
Mothers is an album that sees Swim Deep maturing as a band and growing into themselves, a more fully formed record which should firmly remove them from the B-Town bubble that first helped them to make an impact. It is strong enough to see them develop a sound that is more a reflection of themselves, but not strong enough to fully divest themselves away from their influences, nor is it strong enough for them to fully distance themselves from their debut album for good. Mothers is a good, enjoyable album
On 2013 debut Where The Heaven Are We, Swim Deep were in thrall to the baggy and shoegazing acts of the early ’90s. Like the best bands of those scenes, they’ve elevated their sound by applying their sharp hooks and propulsive grooves to new genres, investigating everything from synth-pop melodrama ( Namaste ) to euphoric trance ( To My Brother ). It’s a try-anything-once approach that pays off majestically on eight-minute, metronomic psych-funk workout Fueiho Boogie.
