Their mammoth impact inspired hundreds of promising young groups to gather under the nearest corner street lamp and harmonize on their latest hit songs. This collection provides a primer on the most important groups and recordings of the 1940s. Without these pioneers, it's hard to imagine The Dominoes and Clovers shaking up the R&B scene so forcefully at the dawn of the 1950s. The die had already been cast. Doo- Wop had its origins in the black pop and gospel groups of the pre-World War II era, but it flourished in the years after World War II and became a major contributing force to the evolution of Rock 'n' Roll. Street Corner Symphonies: The Complete Story of Doo Wop, Vol. 1 (1939-1949). A few other singles here also point to nascent doo wop but most of the music on Street Corner Symphonies, Vol. 1 should be viewed as prehistory for the main event - it is instructive, at times fascinating and entertaining, and always well-annotated by Bill Dahl, but it retains a slight musty air, possibly because the bulk of this music is.

Doo-wop is a genre of rhythm and blues music developed in the 1940s by African American youth, mainly in the large cities of the upper East Coast, including New York. It features vocal group harmony that carries an engaging melodic line to a simple beat with little or no instrumentation. Lyrics are simple, usually about love, ornamented with nonsense syllables, and often featuring, in the bridge, a melodramatically heartfelt recitative addressed to the beloved.

Young, Gifted And Black Aretha Franklin. Upon its release in January 1972, the album yielded four Top Ten singles on the R&B charts and two Top Ten singles on the pop charts. Franklin's stirring cover of Simon and Garfunkel's 'Bridge Over Troubled Water,' recorded during the same sessions but omitted from the initial release, appears on the reissue. Young Aretha also heard the doo-wop sounds of Nolan Strong and The Diablos, The Moonglows, The 5 Royales and The Satins as well as popular '50s hitmakers such as Johnny Ace, Little Willie John, Jackie Wilson, Big Maybelle and Little Esther on the radio.

Young, Gifted And Black. All The King's Horses. Aretha's vocals on this album are breathtaking and incredibly moving. This is essential and timeless Soul music. Reply Notify me 4 Helpful.

Til's crown was about to be snatched away by a daring young tenor whose gospel-fired vocal histrionics were like nothing the secular world had ever encountered in a vocal group setting. Clyde McPhatter was the sensational lead tenor of The Dominoes, a new group assembled by vocal coach/songwriter Billy Ward with hopes of creating a sound not all that far removed from that of The Ink Spots.
