Battles is the twelfth studio album by the Swedish heavy metal band In Flames. It was released on November 11, 2016 in the United States via Eleven Seven Music. It is the last album to feature longtime bassist Peter Iwers and the only album to feature former Red drummer Joe Rickard who replaced longtime drummer Daniel Svensson who left the band in 2015. Battles is the first In Flames album recorded without drummer Daniel Svensson since 1997‘s Whoracle. The band traveled to Los Angeles to record with producer Howard Benson (Halestorm, Skillet, Papa Roach). Whatever battle In Flames have been fighting, Battles signifies the resounding sense of defeat. The guitar work is so far beneath the level that was set a decade ago (let alone two decades ago), the singing and lyricism have never sounded so angst and segments of the album sound like they were recorded underwater. The worst factor: it’s not even an album that you can grow into and appreciate. How veteran musicians like In Flames appear so blind their own devolution is tragically bewildering.
