The vogue for piano duos that peaked in the mid-20th century resulted in a proliferation of concertos written for two pianos and orchestra, many of which have long fallen off the radar. Indeed, out of the seven compositions offered in this first of two volumes surveying 20th-century two-piano concertos, six appear to be first recordings. Tansman's exuberant neoclassical style reaches inventive heights in a four-movement suite from 1928.

Francis Poulenc's Concerto pour deux pianos (Concerto for Two Pianos and Orchestra) in D minor, FP 61, was commissioned by and dedicated to the Princess Edmond de Polignac and composed over the period of three months in the summer of 1932.
