Blues is a blues rock compilation album by Eric Clapton released in 1999. The release features songs from Clapton's 1970s RSO albums, as well as some unreleased material from the same era. Mean Old World" (Walter Jacobs) – 3:50 (Outtake from Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs, 1970). Ain't That Lovin' You" (Jimmy Reed) – 5:26.
West Coast Idea - Eric Clapton. 3. Choker - Eric Clapton & immy Page. 4. I'm Your Witchdoctor - John Mayall & Blues Brothers. Any album of this era featuring Beck, Clapton and Page should be a winner, and this one is. While tracks such as "Snake Drive", "Freight Loader" and "West Coast Idea" have appeared on many (cheap and nasty) releases before this, here we have some serious class and quality to accompany them. Many tracks won't be terribly familiar to most of us, but that's no drawback here.
Jimi was too white for black radio. Here, there were a lot of white guys listening to blues from America and wanting to sound like their heroes. STEPHEN DALE PETIT (contemporary blues guitarist/genre expert): The British contribution to the blues is equal, in my eyes, to what Robert Johnson or Blind Lemon Jefferson did – all of those guys through to Muddy Waters. ERIC CLAPTON: We went off to America to record Disraeli Gears, which I thought was an incredibly good album. And when we got back, no one was interested because Are You Experienced had come out and wiped everybody else out, including us. Jimi had it sewn up.
Eric Clapton, of the Cream, is still very tied to the blues and doesn’t seem to know which way to go. On the Fresh Cream album he fools around with attempts to make the straight three-man thing work but dubs a fourth instrument on several tracks. The results are pretty confusing. First of all, in terms of his own performance, when he does a straight blues he sounds bored. On the American album we find a totally unified presentation of a sound altogether different from that of Red House. Unlike Clapton, Jimi really does think in terms of three instruments, and despite some small amount of dubbing, he has given us the first really new sound in this idiom since the Who’s first album with its Out in the Streets and My Generation. Jimi relies exclusively on his drummer, Mitch Mitchell, for his whole rhythm concept.
