Josh Rouse's 1972 gives away the game in the first line of the first song, the exquisite title track, when he name-checks Carole King. The record is going back in time and it is going to have fun doing it. Rouse's records have always been highly literate and highly musical, but they have never been fun like this, and make no mistake, 1972 is a fun record. Rouse sounds as loose as a goose and the songs reflect that. Not always lyrically, as some of the songs touch on such non-fun subjects as loneliness, repression, and bitterness, but definitely musically.

1972, the latest outing from illian singer/songwriter Josh Rouse, actually signals a jump forward in time for him, despite. Despite a few aberrant wince-worthy moments, which I'll generously chalk up as acceptable losses given that he's chosen throwback 70s strains as this album's vehicle of assault, 1972 finds Rouse winding a tight ball of earnest, insouciant pop balladry. It just may be the most obvious- even contemporarily fatuous- listen I've encountered all year. But you know what: It works. Rouse starts off in his lowest key with the title track.

If singer-songwriter Josh Rouse had actually been releasing records back in 1972, he would’ve been an AM powerhouse. His easily digestible melodies, his warm, soothing croon, and the tasteful, lightly colored arrangements would slot alongside the best of Carole King (whom he namechecks in the title track), Bread, and the Carpenters. This being 30-something years later, Rouse has to settle for critical acclaim and smaller, respectful audiences who can appreciate a well-crafted album. But let’s play along and pretend it is 1972 and these are massive hits

The album, released by singer-songwriter Josh Rouse in 2003, brings you back to a time where funk and soul ruled the charts and creates a unique sound that isn't heard in any other 21st century work. It mixes Rouse's folky chamber pop with the soul of the 70's and the product is a nice mix of songs that show why retro is a good thing sometimes. The album starts off with a bang, a soft one though. 1972" is a quiet ballad that makes great use of the piano and Rouse's subtle vocals. It is a real throwback song, like most of the tracks

I just bought it new hier (dec 2017), (one of the last copies on sale in Europe). Great sound, no crack, no pop(only at the end of last song of lp, its often normal). A great pressing. You may have come across a bad series because i have no problem. I bought two and put one on sale.

This is THE worst sounding LP I own. Unlistenable. Which is unfortunate, because I adore this album.
