Orpheus behind the Wire is a 1983 English setting for 12-part a cappella chorus of five poems by Edward Bond, one of Henze's preferred collaborators. Henze sets all the poems as laments, so the set is consistently slow, and the textures tend to be harmonically dense, though a tonal center is almost always audible, and he is not afraid of using consonance.

Wergo, the record label of Hans Werner Henze's former publisher Schott, has marked the composer's 80th birthday this month with first recordings of two works connected with the Orpheus myth. The sombre, restrained pieces for unaccompanied chorus that make up Orpheus Behind the Wire, completed in 1983, are settings of poems by Edward Bond, who was the librettist for two of Henze's operas We Come to the River and The English Cat, but the provenance of the 2004 "dramma per musica" Aristaeus, for reciter and orchestra is much more complicated. the story of Orpheus and Eurydice from the point of view of Aristaeus, the beekeeper who in some versions of the story was responsible for Eurydice's death. It's curiously successful, for much of Henze's music retains its dramatic power and though sometimes overblown, the text is touching too. Topics.

Rundfunkchor Berlin - Aristaeus, for voice & orchestra~1. The story of Orpheus and Eurydice, the archetype of the experience of loss, is the inspiration for the two pieces on this CD. The Orpheus story has inspired several Henze works, most particularly the eponymous dance-drama written to a scenario by Edward Bond in 1978. Aristaeus (1997, rev 2003) is a reconsideration of that work told this time from the point of view of the lustful shepherd whose pursuit of Eurydice leads to her death. One of several partial recensions, it is the second to feature the shepherd – the finale of Henze’s Solo Violin Sonata being the first. Hans Werner Henze Composer. Robin Gritton Conductor. Hans Werner Henze (1 July 1926 – 27 October 2012) was a German composer. His large oeuvre of works is extremely varied in style, having been influenced by serialism, atonality, Stravinsky, Italian music, Arabic music and jazz, as well as traditional schools of German composition. In particular, his stage works reflect "his consistent cultivation of music for the theatre throughout his life".
