The Artist Formerly Known as Prince (TAFKAP). His 1979 album Prince went platinum, and his next three albums-Dirty Mind (1980), Controversy (1981), and 1999 (1982)-continued his success, showcasing his prominently explicit lyrics and blending of funk, dance, and rock music. In 1984, he began referring to his backup band as The Revolution and released Purple Rain, the soundtrack album to his film debut. It quickly became his most critically and commercially successful release, spending 24 consecutive weeks atop the Billboard 200 and selling 25 million copies worldwide

Prince Rogers Nelson (better known as Prince) (June 7, 1958 – April 21, 2016) was an American musician. He was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He was known for blending erotic lyrics with funk rock and technology. He had ten platinum albums and thirty Top 40 singles during his career. His releases have sold over 80 million copies worldwide. From 1993 to 2000, Prince changed his name to a symbol looking something like this: O(+

In 1993, during negotiations regarding the release of The Gold Experience, a legal battle ensued between Warner Bros. and Prince over the artistic and financial control of his musical output. During the lawsuit, Prince appeared in public with the word "slave" written on his cheek. He explained that he had changed his name to an unpronounceable symbol to emancipate himself from his contract with Warner Bros.

When Prince changed his name to an unpronounceable symbol, it was regarded as both rebellious and foolhardy. Why did he do it? For a generation too young to remember his debut in the late 1970s or the impact of Purple Rain in 1984, Prince - who died yesterday - was perhaps best known as the musician who changed his name to a symbol. In 1993, Prince announced that he would no longer go by the name Prince, but rather by a "Love Symbol" which was a mash-up of the gender symbols for man and woman. It is an unpronounceable symbol whose meaning has not been identified.

I will always remember the day that Prince saved my ass and I wonder to this day if the event in question colored my perception of the artist for the years to come. I don’t know and I don’t care. I first heard Prince in 1981 on a K-Tel compilation double LP called Certified Gold which featured, among other songs, Blondie’s The Tide is High, Devo’s Whip It, Pat Benatar’s Hit Me With Your Best Shot, the Pretenders’ Brass in Pocket (I’m Special), and Kiss’ I Was Made for Lovin’ You.

The Artist Formerly Known as Prince (TAFKAP). As a songwriter: Jamie Starr. Prince was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and developed an interest in music as a young child. He signed a recording contract with Warner Bros. at the age of 18, and released his debut album For You in 1978. His 1979 album Prince went platinum, and his next three records-Dirty Mind (1980), Controversy (1981), and 1999 (1982)-continued his success, showcasing Prince's prominently sexual lyrics and blending of funk, dance, and rock music. In 1984, he began referring to his backup band as the Revolution and released Purple Rain, the soundtrack album to his eponymous.

Notes

This is the initial 5 CD set of Crystal Ball. It was only available to purchase through 1-800-NEW-FUNK, by telephone or online pre-order. The production of the set was limited to 250,000 packages.

The album came in a 3-part round clear polyurethane plastic case, designed to emulate a crystal ball. The package consisted of three components: a convex lid, a semi-circle carriage with grooves to hold each of the five discs, and a bottom tray marked with: "© 1997 NPG Records" only.
The purpose of the custom-packaging was to enhance the value of this limited-edition release, and prevent the possibility of bootlegging.

The artwork and an online lyric book was made available on Prince's 'crystalballcd' website for customers to print their own artwork.

In addition to the 3 disc Crystal Ball album, this package included The Truth, an acoustic album, and Kamasutra, an instrumental recording inspired by the NPG Dance Company.
The version of P. Control included is a remix, different to the album version from The Gold Experience.
