Absence Makes the Heart Grow Fungus is an instrumental record by Omar Rodríguez-López released by Infrasonic Sound. It is one of four solo albums completed in 2001 by Omar Rodríguez-López during the interim period following the demise of At the Drive-In and the formation of The Mars Volta

The Omar Rodriguez Lopez Group (often referred to by its acronym ORLG) is an American experimental rock band, and the main side project of Omar Rodríguez-López. Featuring the ever-changing lineup of musicians alongside Rodriguez-Lopez, the group is most often a live entity to perform the various outlets of his solo music aside from The Mars Volta.

Released in 2008, 'Absence Makes the Heart grow Fungus' has been sitting in Omar's locker for seven years. Therefore it was recorded well before Omar's quintet/group formed. The two other people who appear on the album are Jon Philip Theodore and Sara Christina Gross. Jon was the original drummer with Omar's main project The Mars Volta until being replaced by Thomas Pridgen. Meanwhile Sara plays the saxophone on 'Fungus'. Sara met Omar as Sara's band 'Radio Vaya's' only album was produced by Omar.

Main article: Omar Rodriguez Lopez Group. In 2005 Rodríguez-López relocated to Amsterdam, where he eventually wrote and recorded four separate albums. His first solo project was the "Omar Rodríguez-López Quintet". Rodríguez-López has continued to release a series of albums recorded in 2001 which include Absence Makes the Heart Grow Fungus and Minor Cuts and Scrapes in the Bushes Ahead, both released in late 2008. Sonny Kay, co-owner of the former Gold Standard Labs label with Omar, created the album covers (and has done so for the majority of future Omar releases).

Recorded and mixed between 2001 and 2008. The song "Hands Tied to the Roots of a Hemorrhage" is the foundation of what would become "Eriatarka" on The Mars Volta's first full-length, De-loused in the Comatorium. Also, the song "Teflon" from TMV's 2009 album Octahedron includes parts worked from the song "A Story Teeth Rotted For".
