Chet Atkins - The Essential Chet Atkins flac album

The Essential Chet Atkins is a two-disc compilation recording by American guitarist Chet Atkins, released in 2007 on the Legacy label. The 40 tracks span Atkins' career from "Chet Atkins and the All-Star Hillbillies" ("Guitar Blues") released on Bullet Records to his last solo album Almost Alone ("Big Foot"). The selections include not only Chet's solo recordings and his duets with other guitar players, but also include songs he contributed to as a sideman.

Atkins' virtuosity as a guitarist has never been in question, but here it's allied with good material and taste, showing him as a fine blender of hillbilly, boogie, and jazz styles in a variety of contexts. It's mostly instrumental, of course, but wisely his talents as a sideman are showcased here and there too on vocal sides by the Carter Sisters and Mother Maybelle, Eddy Arnold, the Everly Brothers, and Don Gibson.

I never really heard him until just a couple of years ago when I picked up a CD at a local library when I was feeling a bit glum and wanted to find something perhaps a bit surprising. I was teaching a class of college freshmen and was disappointed with how devoid of any sense of recent (or any other!) cultural history they all were-even the "A" students.
