Originally Braintax was a duo, consisting of Christie and DJ Test, who also contributed vocals and production. Test departed following the 1997 release of the Future Years EP and Christie retained the Braintax name; it has since become synonymous with him as a solo artist. On the track "Monsoon Funk" on Panorama, Christie explained Braintax means "we can all get busy if we use our brains. Braintax's lyrics have made multiple references to spirituality, healthy eating, the state of hip hop music, environmentalism, and politics.

For what it's worth, politics aside; Braintax, in my opinion, did more for UK hip hop than anyone I can think of. Being down with the UK scene since the late 80's, the days of Blade, Demon Boyz, 11:59, Hijack, London Posse, Krispy 3 et al; when Braintax dropped the classic Fathead EP in '92 it blew me away. In terms of subject matter he was the best. His flow and lyrics were on point on every record, being bettered only as an MC (in the UK) by the phenomenon that is Jehst.

Braintax is the recording name of Joseph Christie (born 1973), one of the most important and influential British hip hop artists of the second generation. He hails from Leeds, West Yorkshire, but now lives in London. He is founder (with Breaking the Illusion) and owner of Low Life Records, the longest running UK hip hop record label to consistently release records.
