Holopaw - Quit +/Or Fight flac album

Though they take their name from a town in Florida, it would be easy to think that Holopaw's namesake is a delicate, almost unearthly creature, especially after hearing the band's second album, Quit +/or Fight. While the band's self-titled debut provided a unique, intimate take on the spare, space cowboy side of alt-country, this album dives into folky, soft rock maximalism. 3-shy-cubs" and "Holiday" in particular reflect Quit +/or Fight's '70s leanings (and the latter track's pedal steel is pretty much all that's left of the band's.

The subtle, dreamy qualities presented on the band's sophomore effort take on a life all their own, albeit somewhat of a quiet, subdued life. It's not the album sequencing that's at fault, just the overall length of the songs. Only three songs crack that same amount of minutes, with only one over the four-minute mark, that being the fitting closer, "Shiver," which is ushered out by some very subtle clean guitar plucking and a low drone. Leaving behind their alt-country style, Holopaw more than impress with a very pleasant effort that's sure to peacefully end many of my nights to come.

On first listen, Quit +/or Fight sounds like a digression from the band’s trademark mix of grainy strums and electronic blubbers, but the record is still more of an evolution than a departure. Snippets of found poetry, broken furniture, warm acoustic guitar, blank space and heavily nuanced synths coalesce into a spare, breathtaking whole that’s slightly less instant and melodic than its predecessor, but ultimately just as satisfying. Ghosties hits closest to Holopaw’s older work, opening with a smattering of piano and muted, basketball-dribble drums, before giving way to layered vocals, guitar and a hushed call-and-response chorus. Like Wilco ’s Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, Quit +/or Fight flirts with perfection, a cohesive collection of all-too-fleeting pleasures.
