Jay Reatard's sophomore album is trimmed with all the trappings of lo-fi cool, but once you get past his hip arsenal of aural accoutrements, Watch Me Fall begins to unfold with an emphasis on carefully crafted melodies and arrangements that are much less predictable than the 1-4-5 structures dotting many of his early singles. Without completely segueing into indie-pop, Reatard maintains a balance of his original filthy Memphis grit with tunes that would translate well if covered by more polished commercial bands.

This is a conundrum Jay Reatard's facing now, but it isn't the only one: After a successful run of singles on Matador that was compiled last year, Watch Me Fall is the first official full-length since being signed to the label. While the record peaks early, the rest of Watch Me Fall has a welcome diversity in melody and arrangements, and several late-album growers worth returning to- the kind of thing that makes this an album, and not a singles compilation.

For his sophomore album, Watch Me Fall, the grown-up southern punk widens his vision to a more indie rock/pop inhabited area - proving to his listeners that he's grown out of being just another teenage Reatard. Despite his gothic and sullen look on the cover, Jay is still as bouncy as ever.

But even as he’s marinading in despair, the Reatard’s redeeming himself by dosing up on melody. If his 2006 ‘debut’ (give or take 20 side-projects) ‘Blood Visions’ was a sonic cosh to the back of the head – short sharp stabs of punk energy drowning in dissonance – then ‘Watch Me Fall’ finds him with space to show off the full genius of his songwriting, turning the fuzz down, the jangle up. and taking the (for him) radical decision to throw in violins and even some pianos  .

Memphis' great white hope of garage rock, Jay Reatard has coughed out more singles than a broken soda machine. Sadly, the anticipation for his proper Matador debut has obviously taken its toll.

Jay Reatard is something of an underground legend. And a prolific one, at that. At 29 years old, he has the kind of discography that most musicians twice his age would shed a tear at.
